Reclamation and Restoration Monitoring & Reporting

Abnova Ecological Solutions specializes in monitoring and reporting outcomes of reclamation and restoration efforts.  Dr. Curran developed field techniques to improve data collection & data quality which are 10-40x faster than traditional techniques (depending if handheld or drone imagery is used).  Not only do these techniques satisfy regulatory criteria, they give operators and other stakeholders rapid reports with spatially-explicit dashboards to help them make informed decisions to improve reclamation & restoration practices.

Erosion, Vegetation, and Compliance Monitoring

Abnova Ecological Solutions has a firm grasp of environmental policies, regulatory criteria, and compliance measures in place related to reclamation and restoration. Dr. Curran developed a monitoring system which utilizes handheld or drone imagery to collect data 10-40x faster than traditional methods (see our Publication page). Not only do these methods satisfy regulatory criteria, they also provide information to provide operators and other stakeholders to make informed decisions to improve management practices.

Ecosystem Services Monitoring & Ecosystem Health

Satisfying regulatory agencies is certainly an important part of any good monitoring system. However, the intent of restoring ecosystems shouldn't be focused solely on checking boxes for compliance. At Abnova Ecological Solutions, we are able to go above and beyond typical compliance monitoring to assess ecosystem health and functionality. We do this mainly by measuring ecosystem services and have experience monitoring biodiversity response to restoration activities, soil carbon, net primary productivity, food webs, pollination services, and more.

Spatially-Explicit Dashboards & Reports

We're well aware that monitoring data geared specifically for satisfying regulatory criteria isn't intended for thorough analysis and typically winds up getting lost in a filing cabinet. While working with data from 26 oil and gas companies in Wyoming, Dr. Curran realized this data could be used to better understand how management decisions impact reclamation outcomes. He conceived the idea of spatially-explicit dashboarding to give operators and other stakeholders a clear picture (rather than a cumbersome stack of papers) of reclamation outcomes on a map. Creating easy-to-interpret data (we typically use "traffic-light logic") which can be used to improve management decisions rapidly after field data is collected saves operators significant money and allows them to make informed decisions.
